Aerosol research
Activities of the aerosol group
The aerosol research group investigates the physico-chemical properties and behaviour of aerosol particles in the lower troposphere. The focus is on two research topics:

- Development and application of measurement methods for studying the size-resolved chemical character of tropospheric aerosol particles
- Investigation of atmospheric processes responsible for the formation and subsequent evolution of these particles
The research includes both continuous and more intensive field measurements, laboratory work, and modelling. These activities can be further divided as follows:
Field measurements:
- Finnish Arctic (Sevettijärvi)
- Greenland ice sheet
- Antarctica
- Arctic Ocean
- Urban aerosols in the Helsinki area
Laboratory work:
- particle size classification by impaction
- performance of particle sizers
- methods for measuring carbonaceous aerosols
- measurement of vehicle emissions
- ion chromatography
Modelling activities:
- particle growth processes in the lower troposphere
- aerosol chemistry of sulfur compounds
- secondary organics and aerosol dynamics
The research is carried out mainly in different projects involving both national and international collaborators. The results are published in scientific journals.

The head of the Aerosol Group is Senior Research Scientist Risto Hillamo, phone +358 (9) 1929 5500,
