Research

The main research subject of the Finnish Meteorological Institute is the Earth's atmosphere. Other research topics include the study of near space and solar influence on the planet's atmospheres.

The research carried out by the Finnish Meteorological Institute is important because of its influence both on society as well as on the daily life of individual people. For example, the weather forecasts have become more accurate due to our research. We also produce valuable information for the stakeholders on issues like the enhancement of the greenhouse effect and the air quality.

Our research is multidisciplinary. Beside meteorology, physics, chemistry, statistics and biology are needed.

Satellite and weather radar measurements provide a new approach for several research topics. The further development of these measuring methods is one of the key issues of our research.

There is a close co-operation between the research department and daily weather service. Natural research partners outside the Finnish Meteorological Institute are other Finnish research institutes as well as the international science community. We also work with municipal and state authorities. The applications we have developed serve also the commercial sector of the society.

The research topics described in more detail on these pages are:

Meteorological research includes subjects like atmospheric modelling and wind energy.
Air quality research consist of atmospheric dispersion modelling, atmospheric chemistry research and air quality monitoring research
Middle and upper atmosphere introduces ozone and UV-radiation research.
Space research includes research topics like the Earth magnetosphere, northern lights, the atmosphere of planet Mars, the moon Titan of planet Saturn and the dust and radiation in our solar system.
Climate change includes an introduction to our climate change research activities.
Polar research introduces the special requirements on research that our location at high latitudes sets for us.
