Geomagnetic recordings
Research on geomagnetism at GEO has its roots in the early history of FMI in 1830's when the Helsinki magnetic-meteorological observatory was founded. Magnetic recordings at the earth's surface are still the most important part of our work, including nowadays the main responsibility of the IMAGE magnetometer network. Together with the expansion of GEO to space research, the magnetism group is closely involved both with near earth plasma studies as well as with planetary research.
Special project pages
IMAGE magnetometer network is an international project for monitoring geomagnetic variations in Fennoscandia and Svalbard.

Nurmijärvi Geophysical Observatory is responsible for geomagnetic recordings and for operating a magnetic test laboratory.

Geomagnetic charts are one of the most important products of the magnetism group.

Geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) are one example of terrestrial effects of geomagnetic activity (space weather)
