When does the snow fall on the ground?

The very first snowflakes falls on the ground early in the fell area of Lapland - usually in late August or early September. First covering snow cover and permanent snow cover falls on the ground different times in different parts of the country. In Lapland the winter is long (approximately seven months) and the permanent snow cover comes significantly earlier than in southern Finland.

In the maps there are the average dates of the first covering snow cover (left) and the permanent snow cover (right) in winters 1970/71 - 1999/00.

And when the snow cover melts away?

The snow cover is usually thickest at mid March, in Lapland often as late as early April. Soon after that the snow cover starts to melt fast.

The average snow depth on March 15th (left) and the last day of permanent snow cover (right) in years 1971-2000.
